To Market, to Market – The Oranjezicht City Farm Market

To Market, to Market – The Oranjezicht City Farm Market

If you want to know where Cape Town’s beautiful and fashionable set hang out on weekend mornings, look no further than the Oranjezicht City Farm Market (or, OZCF Market as it’s known to locals). This market originated on the beautiful grounds of Leeuwenhof, and Capetonians sipping their almond lattes could go and say hello to ‘tannie’ Helen Zille who frequently wandered out to have a look-see. Unfortunately, due to the wet nature of Cape winters and with the market growing rapidly in size and popularity, there were concerns about the lawns of this heritage site becoming sodden and muddy. A new location was needed that could handle a bit of rain and a lot of feet, so the veggie sellers packed up their organic kohlrabi and moved to a new spot in Granger Bay.

This location beside the sea proved to be a huge success, attracting its share of trustafarians, models and movie-stars — and, of course, loads of ordinary folk who come to source fresh eggs, Italian chorizo, farm chickens and basketfuls of organic veggies and fruit. There is a huge selection of delicacies to choose from, and if you’re a foodie type you’ll be in heaven. Duck eggs and velvety duck egg mayo, artisanal bread, ethically sourced meats and cheeses are just some of the joys on offer. And, if you don’t like to cook, there’s a huge array of ready-made stuff to choose from.

This market caters to rawists, vegans, vegetarians and the gluten-intolerant. There are paper-thin crepes for the Francophiles and meaty options for carnivores. Try some South African potjie, a Moroccan lamb wrap, a juicy steak sandwich or a plate of tender pork belly. If you’d prefer something light there are salads, an abundance of Asian options and smoothies and juices galore. Whatever your poison, it’s great to grab a seat and watch the city amble by. You’ll see hippies and hipsters, glamorous grannies, yogis and ladies who lunch; Brazilian models and fashion photographers, chefs and friendly farmers. And if someone really famous were to waltz by, you can be assured that nobody would even look up from their lentils. Capetonians are just too cool.

But if any of this sounds scary, it really isn’t. It’s a lovely gathering place, packed with good food, good energy and good sea vibrations. Go early if you want to sit down and eat, as this market is popular and gets crazy-busy towards lunchtime. And take lots of money. You’re going to want to buy it all. It’s open Saturdays 9am – 2pm, Sundays 9am – 3pm and Wednesday evenings 4pm – 8pm.

Don’t miss the…

Watermelon Juice

It’s freshly pressed, incredibly hydrating and comes in the dinkiest little glass bottle you should save and use as a vase.

Shakshuka
This tasty, centuries-old Mediterranean dish consists of eggs poached in a stew of ripe tomatoes, olive oil, peppers, onion and garlic. It’s commonly spiced with cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper and nutmeg, and served with a hunk of fresh bread for dipping.

Mushroom kebabs
Who knew the humble mushroom could taste so decadent? The folk who run this stall have perfected the art of seasoning, and their braaied skewers of oyster, shiitake, chanterelle and black mushrooms are utterly mouth-watering (tip: you might be tempted to share one, but don’t; get your own. They are that good, and there is often a waiting-list while they try and catch up with the demand).

Samoosas
If you think samoosas are pockets of chicken or beef, think again. The market’s samoosa people have taken fillings to new culinary heights, and the result is a resounding thumbs-up. Think: cheese and corn, prawn, snoek, spicy potato and sweet butternut. They’re fresh, still a little bit warm and a whole lot delicious.
