Fit in the City – Fitness in Cape Town

Cape Town has evolved hugely over the past few decades, and a focus on health and wellness is one of the many ways it has transformed itself into a modern, user-friendly city. Its perfect climate, good roads and unique position between sea and mountain make it a big playground for the fitness-focused people of Cape Town, and with all the outdoor activities at your fingertips you don’t need a gym membership. Park runs, trail runs and cycle events are hosted almost every weekend, but if you’re looking for something low-key to burn off those craft beer calories, here are a few fun options.

1. Hike up Signal Hill

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful way to get your heart rate going. Signal Hill is a comfortable, slow wind upwards with jaw-dropping views of the coastline, the city and Table Mountain. It’s a popular morning jaunt, with or without dog in tow. It takes about an hour to reach the top, so it’s not that hard to fit in a walk on a working day. It’s busy in the evenings, too, especially when it’s full moon and people hike up to see the sun go down and the moon come up. It’s an absolutely spectacular sight, and one not to be missed. In Cape Town, nature is never far away, and gentle mountain walks are a great way to breathe and decompress.

2. Cycle Along the Promenade

Cape Town is a city of serious cyclists, but if you have no interest in the Argus, the promenade is the place to get your legs pumping. For years bikes were not allowed on this pedestrian-only strip, but as of a few years ago the law changed and bicycles are available for rent on the Pavilion next to the Sea Point pools. There is no traffic to dodge, and it’s gorgeous cycling beside the sea with a fresh breeze in your face. If you continue left (facing the sea) till the road ends you’ll get to a magnificent corner of rocky coastline with huge, crashing waves. Sit on a bench for a bit and admire nature at her powerful best. Or if you’re hungry, head right in the direction of the Waterfront and find an outside table at Sotano in Mouille Point. They have great cocktails, tapas and sushi and live music on Sundays.

3. Be a Sk8ter Girl (or Boy)

If you happen to drive down Sea Point’s Beach Road on a Monday evening you’ll be amazed to see masses of skateboarders cruising along the pavement. Skating is very trendy at the moment, and as we know Cape Town is fashionable AF. If you’re a beginner (and everyone was once a beginner), never fear — the V&A Skate park is a good place for youngsters and newbies. Once you’ve more-or-less got the hang of it, join the cool crowd. The vibe is very LA.

4. Pump It In the Park

Outdoor gyms have become an essential feature of any happening city, and at any time of the day or night the outdoor gyms on the Sea Point promenade and the Green Point Urban Park are pumping. Working out in the fresh air beats gym any day, and it’s a great way to get in an upper body workout at the end of a run.

5. Walk Along the Pipe Track

The well-known Pipe Track dates back to 1887, making it one of Table Mountain’s oldest hiking routes. It was constructed to lay pipelines, and to this day it carries water from the Table Mountain reservoir to the city of Cape Town. This gentle hike along the Western slopes of the mountain runs parallel to the pipes and offers spectacular views of Lion’s Head, Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It meanders through picturesque ravines, past fynbos and a wide variety of proteas. The hike takes around two hours one way, and while it is an easy walk, be sure to pack enough water and snacks. The path has shade in the mornings but gets sunnier as the day progresses, so wear a hat and sunscreen and get off to an early start.
